• 林和靖(りんなせい/りんわせい)​　　　　　　　　　　​林逋(りんほ)。967-1028。中国、北宋の詩人で、西湖のほとりの山に隠遁し、鶴を飼い、梅を愛でて暮らしたという。「和靖」は死後さずけられた諡(おくりな)。

• 雛鶴太夫​　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　天明年間に江戸吉原で絶大な人気を誇った遊女。

狂歌解説

　「千羽靏折形序」で「千とせの齢あれば」と謳われる鶴ですが、この狂歌では、「鶴」を「雛鶴太夫」にかこつけ、さらに鶴を愛でたという伝説のある林和靖を登場させて、長寿の印としての鶴を俗っぽく詠んでいます。
雛鶴太夫を身請けして寵愛したので、鶴と名のあるとおり、いつまでも「りん(凛)と」精力絶倫でいられた「林和仙人」であることよ、という語呂合わせです。林逋はふつう「林和靖」あるいは「和靖先生」などと呼ばれるので、「林和仙人」となるのは不自然ですが、「靖」の「せ」の音と「仙」とを重ね、また歌に「ちとせ」とあることから「千」と「仙」とを掛けたのかも知れません。

• Rin Wasei  (林和靖),                                                       ​A Chinese poet during the Northern Song (北宋) dynasty Lin Bu (林逋; 967-1028), who allegedly secluded himself by the West Lake (西湖) keeping cranes and cherishing plum blossoms. His masterpiece includes a poem on the flowers titled 暗香浮動黄昏. Wasei (和靖; Hejing in Chinese) is his posthumous name.

• Hinazuru-tayū (雛鶴太夫)                                             An immensely popular prostitute at Yoshiwara (吉原), Edo active in the Tenmei (天明) era.

 

 

Interpretation
 

 In this kyōka, Ritō included a crane, which he described as living for one thousand years in the introduction, as Hinazuru-tayū along with Rin Wasei, who is said to have cherished plum blossoms and cranes, to make the symbol of long lives vulgar.
Here rin bears two meanings: 林 (the name of the poet) and 凛 (lit. dignified) to imply that Rinwa-sennin (林和仙人) maintained his sexual vigor as long as a crane lives because of his favor (寵愛: chōai) to Hinazuru-tayū whose redemption he paid for (身請け: miuke). Referring to Lin Bu as Rinwa-sennin is strange, for the poet is usually called Rin Wasei or Wasei-sensei (和靖先生) in Japanese. Ritō may have used the character 仙 (sen), instead of 靖 (sei), as a pun on 千 (sen: thousand).
